Photo credit: web.mac.comThe Citizens Forum for Good Governance (CFGG) and the Coalition in Defense of Democracy (CDD) today announced the establishment of the Dominica Democracy Fund to support the pro-democracy activities of Dominican patriots around the world dedicated to upholding the Constitution and ensuring respect for the rule of law.Founding member of the CDD Attorney Gabriel Christian says the Washington DC based group of Dominican patriots overseas is pleased to team up with its home based counterpart the CFGG “in the creation of a fund to help ensure that government of the people, by the people, for the people will never disappear from Dominica”.Christian believes Dominican patriots of all political persuasions and from all walks of life must stand firm in defense of the Constitution as the backbone of our democracy especially in the face of comments from the head of Government that “no law, including the Constitution can prevent him” from violating the qualifying criteria for membership in Parliament.A number of statements from Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit in recent times have openly attacked the rights of citizens to freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of conscience. The CFGG and the CDD are particularly concerned that these blatant, anti-democratic statements confirm Skerrit’s preference for tyrannical rule at a time when the victims of this misfortune elsewhere in the world are purposefully dismantling their dictatorial regimes.CFGG Chairman Atherton Martin says this collaborative effort by Dominican patriots at home and abroad is an important vote of confidence in the collective ability “to rescue the governance Dominica from the clutches of international banditry that specializes in the sale of our sovereignty and human dignity”.The Dominica Democracy Fund will be officially launched at the start of a Radio-thon on Between U & Me this Saturday from 4:00 pm to commence fund raising for the appeal of the January 10th, 2012 decision in the dual allegiance disqualification case against Roosevelt Skerrit and Petter St Jean. The ruling of Justice Gertel Thom dealt a grievous blow to our Constitution, the rule of law and our democracy and must of necessity be appealed in the public interest. Accordingly, assisting with the funding of this appeal has become the first priority for the Dominica Democracy Fund which will also support other pro democracy causes such as the defense of Thomson Fontaine. In an attempt to stifle his democratic rights, the publisher of The Dominican.Net has been sued by Roosevelt Skerrit for reporting the truth about the sale of Dominican passports and diplomatic immunity.
